Minehead Cemetery's historic Lychgate is set to undergo essential preservation works following a resolution by Minehead Town Council in its November Full Council meeting. Dating back to the early 20th century, this important heritage structure has shown significant signs of age and deterioration, prompting the need to undergo a comprehensive restoration project.
The preservation work will involve specialist joinery contractors who will carefully manage the restoration process. Initially, acrow props will be installed to ensure the structure's stability and safety. During the works, the Lychgate will be fenced off to protect public access and ensure worker and visitor safety.
Contractors will carefully raise the structure to remove and inspect the oak wall plates, which are in particularly poor condition. The existing oak uprights will then be thoroughly examined, with decisions made about their potential reuse or replacement. All replacement materials will be high-quality European oak, maintaining the structure's historical integrity.
In addition to structural repairs, the project includes replacing the existing gates. New gates crafted from durable Iroko wood will be installed, designed to complement the Lychgate's original aesthetic. While the cemetery is not within the Wodcombe conservation area, the Minehead Conservation Society has been consulted and fully supports the restoration efforts, even offering a generous £500 donation upon project completion.
The total project cost is estimated at approximately £12,000. The council has proactively budgeted for these works, with general reserves available to support cemetery improvements. Although the expenditure may seem significant, the long-term benefits are substantial. With careful maintenance, the Lychgate is expected to stand for another century, continuing to serve as a cherished historical landmark for Minehead.
By investing in this preservation work, Minehead Town council demonstrates its commitment to protecting local heritage and maintaining important historical structures for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
